Bird Flu Notice

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has now been detected in New Zealand. Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease that affects wild and domestic birds and can also be transmitted to mammals, including pets and people. 

Although the risk of bird flu to humans is low, it is generally only found in people who have significant contact with infected birds or animals. Viruses can change over time, so it is important to stay vigilant. 

 

Reducing the risk for your pets: 

To help keep your pets safe from bird flu: 

  • Ensure wild birds cannot access your pet’s food or water. 

  • Do not allow your pets to touch or eat wild birds or animals. 

  • Keep pets on a lead around wild birds. 

  • If you have been travelling through wildlife areas, ensure gear, clothing, and footwear are cleaned. 

Keeping your pet birds safe: 

The best way to keep your pet birds safe is to prevent contact with wild birds, contaminated environments, and contaminated materials. 

 

What to do if you find sick or dead birds: 

If you encounter any sick or injured birds, please keep your distance and contact the Department of Conservation (DOC) for advice. Many birds that require assistance will still have illnesses or injuries unrelated to bird flu. 

If you find three or more sick or dead birds together within a short period, do not touch or move them. Report them immediately to the MPI 24-hour Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66 or online at report.mpi.govt.nz.
